Traumatic Brain Injury

Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI) can occur when the brain is damaged by a sudden trauma.

What are the symptoms, or warning signs, of TBI?

Symptoms of a TBI can be mild, moderate, or severe, depending on how much damage was done to the brain.

Symptoms of a mild TBI include:

  • Loss of consciousness for a few seconds or not at all
  • Headache
  • Confusion
  • Dizziness, losing your balance, or lightheadedness
  • Blurred vision
  • Ringing in the ears and sensitivity to bright light
  • More tired than usual
  • Mood swings or trouble concentrating

Symptoms of a moderate or severe TBI include:

  • Similar symptoms to the mild TBI
  • Headache that does not go away
  • Vomiting
  • Seizures
  • Inability to awaken from sleep
  • Slurred speech
  • Loss of coordination or numbness in your arms or legs
  • Easily irritated

How do you treat a TBI?

If you are showing signs of a TBI, then you should see a doctor as soon as possible.  It is important to try to reduce further injury.  The treatment varies depending on how severe the TBI is.  People with very severe TBI can receive rehabilitation therapy that involves physical therapy, speek therapy, psychological and social support.  There are many different combinations of therapy and medicines available to help people with a TBI.  The first step is to see your doctor to develop an individualized care plan!

How is a TBI different from PTSD?

PTSD and TBI can both result from being in a combat situation.  They both share the same symptoms as well and the differences are hard to detect.

It is important to note that a TBI is a physical injury and PTSD in an emotional or behavioral disorder.   It is possible to have a TBI and PTSD at the same time.  Again, it is important to talk to your doctor who can help get you the care that you need.

TBI and the Military

Recent studies show that up to 20-30% of returning military from Iraq or Afghanistan are showing symptoms of a brain injury.  If you were exposed to a blast, in a vehicle crash, or had your head hit, it is possible to have a brain injury.  Being near a blast, such as an IEC, RPG, or grenade when they explode, is the most common cause for a TBI in military.  Many times, the symptoms of a TBI go undiagnosed and untreated.
